Namesake
Sheffield, Tasmania, known as the "Town of Murals," boasts over 60 large murals depicting the town's history and community. The murals started in 1985 to boost tourism, inspired by Chemainus, Canada. Sheffield offers attractions like the Sheffield Heritage Museum and Redwater Creek Steam and Heritage Society. The picturesque area is also known for its agricultural production and scenic landscapes, including Mount Roland and Lake Barrington.
The Sheffield area is traditionally the land of the Tommeginne people, an Aboriginal group who have lived in Tasmania for thousands of years. Their rich cultural heritage includes intricate knowledge of the land, flora, and fauna, which they have traditionally managed and preserved. The arrival of European settlers dramatically impacted their way of life, leading to significant changes in their traditional practices and population.
