The Science of Smell

Did you know that our sense of smell is connected directly to the limbic system in our brains? This system houses our emotions, memory, and behavior. In other words, what we smell can have a direct impact on how we feel! That's why certain smells can trigger such strong emotional reactions. Familiar scents can take us back to happy memories or evoke certain feelings of comfort and safety.

So how does eucalyptus fit into all of this? Eucalyptus is widely known for its menthol-like scent which can help to clear congestion and soothe sore throats. But did you know that it also has mood-boosting properties? Studies have shown that the scent of eucalyptus can help to increase energy levels and improve mental focus. It's also been shown to reduce stress and anxiety levels. Sounds like exactly what we all need this time of year, right?

How to Use Eucalyptus in Your Home

Now that we know a little bit more about the science behind the scent, let's talk about how to use eucalyptus in your home.

Eucalyptus Branches

One of the most popular ways to incorporate eucalyptus into your décor is by using eucalyptus branches. You can find these branches pre-dried at most craft stores. All you need to do is put them in a vase and enjoy the fresh, woodsy scent. If you want to intensify the smell, you can add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to the water. This method is perfect for those who want an subtle scent that lasts for a long time.

Eucalyptus Wreaths

Another great way to decorate with eucalyptus is by making a wreath out of it. This project is perfect for beginners as all you need is some twine, some wire cutters, and of course, eucalyptus branches. Simply gather a bunch of branches together and tie them off with the twine. Hang the wreath on your front door or in any room that could use a little freshening up. For an extra touch, you can add a bow or some berries to the wreath.

Potpourri Sachets

Potpourri sachets are an easy and inexpensive way to enjoy the scent of eucalyptus all year round. All you need are some small cloth bags, dried eucalyptus leaves, and (optional) lavender buds. Fill each bag with a handful of leaves and buds, then tie it off with some string or ribbon. You can put these sachets anywhere in your home – in drawers, closets, or even under your pillow at night. Not only will they make your home smell nice, but they'll also help keep insects away.

Eucalyptus Candles

One of the simplest ways to enjoy the scent of eucalyptus in your home is by lighting a scented candle. Some excellent examples are our Ellis: Ghost Gum Breeze candle, the Banjo: Australian Bush or the festive-smelling Matilda: Eucalyptus & Fresh Berries. Alternatively, blend eucalyptus with lavender with our Constance candle.

You can also make your own! Start with a soy or beeswax candle base and add a few drops of eucalyptus fragrance oil. That's all there is to it! As the candle burns, the fragrance will be released into the air, filling your home with the fresh, clean scent of eucalyptus.

Eucalyptus Scented Wax Tablets

Our best selling scented wax tablets are also available in a variety of eucalyptus scents. Simply pop them in a drawer to scent your folded items, or leave the tablet in a ceramic tray in the bathroom. The scent should last about 6 months. As an added bonus, these make a great gift or stocking stuffer.
